Say what you will about his prowess in the live arena, but there's simply no denying that on record, Bernard Sumner has one of the most impressive deliveries in all of music, his icy-cool intonation and cheeky yet poetic lyrics making him the prototypical post-punk frontman. Granted, Sumner's posh drawl is only half of Electronic's draw; he helms the project alongside ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, but it has always been apparent that he is the star of the show. Twisted Tenderness, the group's third long-player, was originally released in late 1999 to rave reviews from fans and critics alike. An altogether more rocking affair than its immediate predecessor, Raise the Pressure, Twisted Tenderness' throbbing basslines, gnarled guitars and stealthy synths not only delivered on the promise of the group's first record, but undoubtedly influenced Sumner as he went to work on New Order's latest offering, Get Ready. This deluxe edition of that record features new art, as well as a bonus disc filled with alternate versions, B-sides and remixes. While not a totally necessary entity, the second disc is worth the price for the mesmerizing non-album tracks "King for a Day" and "Radiation" -- as well as Two Lone Swordsmen's trippy and blippy reworking of "Prodigal Son", which somehow manages to transform the original into a Krautrocking slice of post-modern IDM. While it may have been swept under the rug in the wake of New Order's return, this little gem of a record consistently proves itself worthy of the deluxe treatment.
