Quirky music can be wonderful; there's something really endearing about a band that sounds a little
off -- within reason, of course. There's a fine line between quirky and annoying, and very few bands are talented enough to stop before crossing that line.
Furtips definitely fly right past that line, and they never look back. It may be because of their heavy accents, or perhaps because one of them sounds like Kermit the Frog (on "Colonel Impossible"), or maybe it's because they occasionally make use of strange instrumentation, combined with and lots and lots of keyboards (see "Selection Kat" for proof"). But something about them makes them a quirky band, and they overplay it to such an extent that it becomes annoying.
Even the worst album has some merit, however, and When My Baby Smiles at Me, I Go To Rio's high points come from sometime vocalist Yonica Eronika. Though relegated to the background for much of the album, on the few occasions he's allowed to sing lead, such as on "BWC Caruso", the album sparkles. He has a sleepy singing style, as if someone grabbed him out of bed and put a microphone in front of him -- and in the context of this album, it works really well. Unfortunately, as previously mentioned, his appearances here are limited, and are definitely not enough to pull When My Baby Smiles at Me, I Go To Rio back to the right side of the quirky/annoying line.
