The simple and overriding premise behind the Dean Quixote soundtrack is that it's important to make mix-tapes for your friends -- which, as any reputable music geek will tell you, pretty much comes with the territory. Along those lines of thinking, it then becomes important to view Dean Quixote as a mix-tape, rather than as a typical movie soundtrack. Who wouldn't be totally psyched to get a tape crammed with goodies from überbands like Bevis Frond, Beachwood Sparks, Songs:Ohia and Bettie Serveert? Or to flip open that little plastic case and discover Elephant 6-related treats like The Minders' sweetly succinct "Our Man in Bombay" or The Apples in Stereo's "What Happened Then"? I'd also be amiss if I failed to mention that Guided by Voices not only make an appearance in the film, but contribute old favorite "If we Wait" (from Sunfish Holy Breakfast) to its already impressive spool. However, despite Dean Quixote's prestigious content, a pair of unknowns all but steal the show -- Rebar's blasting "The Burn that is on Me" and Spink's lovely, stripped-down rendition of Will Oldham's "New Partner" come out of absolutely nowhere, and are all the more impressive for it. Your friends can fend for themselves -- this is one mix-tape that you'll want to keep all to yourself.
