While he's not exactly a part of the UK nu-chill scene that counts Zero 7 and Lemon Jelly among its protagonists, Rephlex mainstay Chris "Cylob" Jeffs has created an album of downbeat electro-pop so glacial, you'll need a parka to enjoy it properly. Eschewing the darker, electronic-funk-inflected feel of such previous releases as Cylobian Sunset, Jeffs has concentrated his efforts on creating music that soothes the body, soul and mind. Largely inspired by a trip to the gardens and monasteries of Japan, Mood Bells is a heady journey through a fractured electronic underworld filled with minimalist beats, (electronically generated) traditional Asian instrumentation and glistening melodies. When you listen to tracks like "Mood Gong" and "Worlds within Worlds", you can almost feel yourself sitting in a secluded Kabuki garden, far away from the trials and tribulations of the modern world (which, perhaps ironically, produced this soothing music). Jeffs' interpretations of ancient musical forms ("Mood Bowls" and "Gong Meditation") are at once peaceful and surreal, trance-like rhythms and antiquated melodies combining to create a some of the most supine sounds heard in the last five years. He may very well be a disciple of legendary noisemongers Aphex Twin and µ-Ziq, but Cylob is now living (electronic) proof that, as the saying goes, "quiet is the new loud". Pump down the volume.
