Boy oh boy, do I hate that Jack Johnson. It's a shame, then, that his lifeless, white-flour voice opens this tribute. Even worse, Johnson's take on "Badfish/Boss DJ" is only the worst cover on the album until Michael Franti & Spearhead step up for "What I Got" -- and that's the very next track. From there on, it quickly becomes clear that this comp is less of a tribute than a cruel defacing of Sublime's modest legacy.
At least Fishbone manage to inject their own adreneline pumping style into "Date Rape", and Pennywise do a good "Same In The End". The rest of the album falls prey to the well-intentioned but ultimately pointless pairings of which most tributes are guilty. The few attention-worthy moments on this otherwise dull disc can only be credited to Sublime, who wrote at least a few tunes good enough to withstand even G Love's grooveless attacks on all that is decent and good in the world. If you do fork over the cash, a portion of your money won't be completely wasted -- it will go to Carlos Santana's Milagro Foundation for poor kids. Boy oh boy, do I hate that Carlos Santana.
