Employing classic rock hooks and straightforward lyrics, The Chinch Bugs tip their hats to all kinds of classic '60s sounds, from the distinctly pop ("Joking Around") to more of a psychedelic/San Francisco/Jefferson Airplane ambiance ("Never Get Sober"). The latter style informs many of guitarist Lila Karash's solos, especially "Happy Ending Man", on which her lead work is stolen directly from the a Holding Company song. The tunes are definitely low on frills -- it's almost all guitar, bass and drums, with occasional oboe or English horn thrown in for variety's sake (both work equally well) compliments of multi-instrumentalist Jenny Loupe. The no frills attitude is equally true of the lyrics: The Chinch Bugs' songs come straight from the personal/expressive school of writing, whether the theme is dysfunctionality ("Illin'") or striving for emotional directness ("Fear"). Although some of the songs seem a bit too simplistic, Karash's guitar work is a pleasure. If you truly believe that "less is more", you're bound to find Infestation very palatable.
